Whole School

welcome back

Welcome back.

Hello and welcome back to the start of a new year. I welcome those of you returning into class 4 and those of you who are new. Either way, the classroom looks a little different to how you may have seen it last. I am excited to start a new journey with you all and look forward to teaching you in your final years at St James’.

Below is some information about our new classroom and what to expect.

Our week is outlined below. Spelling and times tables will be taught daily and some foundation subjects may be blocked out depending on our theme. However, some subjects will be taught over alternate weeks.

English Information

Reading is crucial in everything that children do. We aim to nurture a love of reading and encourage children to read a wide range of age-appropriate texts. We monitor children’s reading at home through the Home School Diaries. It is a whole school expectation that children read five times per week, for approximately 15 minutes each time. We teach reading through Guided Reading sessions in school each day where we spend time reading and analysing texts as a whole class.

Children in Year 5 and 6 will be expected to wear full uniform each day (with the exception of Forest school and PE days – see timetable above). Children will be asked to remain smart throughout the day and have shirts tucked in. Appropriate school shoes need to be worn at all times. No jewelry to be worn (watches are fine and encouraged but please no SMART watches. All watches are worn at the owners own risk).

PE days are on Wednesdays. Please can children come to school in PE kits on Wednesdays to allow for a quick transition into PE. In winter, children will need to wear sufficient layers (school jumpers and Jogging bottoms), the corrects footwear (trainers) and ensure they have a change of socks incase of damp weather.

Forest school

Forest school days are on Tuesdays. Forest school kit includes long sleeved tops, jumpers, trousers and trainers (wellies also). Please no t-shirts, shorts or skirts on forest school days. Some forest school sessions will have a curriculum focus where children will embed skills learnt in the curriculum and also learn new outdoor skills as part of their OAA element of the curriculum.

For this term, children will be able to choose a piece of homework from the grid and bring it in for our display. Each homework piece will focus on a different area of the curriculum. Please choose one per week and have a go. Homework will commence in week two.

As the term progresses, Maths and English homework will be set weekly and will be set on a Thursday. In addition to this, it is expected that children know all of their times tables off by heart in Year 5 and 6.
